A LITTLE MORE ABOUT ME
Joy Wasson, Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT) Level Two
A yoga practitioner since 1999, I have over 700+ hours of direct teacher training since 2013. I received my Level 1 certification in 2015 and Level 2 in 2017. Learn what these levels mean and what is required to attain this certification here.
I believe deeply that there are two pillars that comprise a firm foundation in teaching; continual training and mentorship. Since August, 2021 I have had the humbled experience of taking weekly classes directly from the RIMYI Institute in Pune, India with Abhijata Iyengar, Senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher and grand-daughter to the late yoga master BKS Iyengar whom this method was named after. I also receive regular instruction, connection, and guidance from my mentor, Becky Lloyd, Level 3 Iyengar Yoga Teacher and owner of Audubon Yoga in New Orleans, LA. In addition to this, I recently began my path of mentoring aspiring yoga teachers, a service I am grateful and humbled to begin.
I emphasize in my teaching the merit and value in approaching your practice with curiosity, tenacity, and with reverence to yourSELF. I have a particular interest in how yoga compliments and improves coping skills during periods of high stress and/or trauma. I also enjoy studying how yoga benefits women during all life stages.
My experience includes teaching multiple audiences including school aged children, pregnant women, drug/alcohol rehabilitation groups, sports teams, Crossfit gyms, athletes, special needs, and rehabilitation from injuries. Please email me with any questions you may have about Iyengar yoga, my classes, group sessions, or private lessons. I would be honored to connect with you on the path of yoga.
What People Say
Joy is a superb teacher. She is well trained in Iyengar yoga and works with all level of students, always focusing on each student, their specific physical issues, and their abilities. I love taking class with Joy. Her sequences involve poses that build on each other, so that one can ultimately achieve a more difficult pose if one is ready to do so. Joy is extremely flexible in her teaching, offering modifications for students. I am so glad she is doing on line classes as a means to continue my yoga practice. She is easy to follow on line and provides feedback to the individual students , In a word, Joy is a "joy."
Joy was one of my first yoga instructors. I was quite wary at first since I certainly did not know Sanskrit names for the poses. Here I was taking yoga because I was injured from other forms of exercise. I thought it would just be stretching. Nope. I have learned so much through my teachers, especially Joy. She smiles for encouragement. Before class she wants to know how each one of us are so she can modify a pose personally to our particular injury or pain. But, even so, she will tell you how to correct a position, to breathe, to think about your body during the pose, and to not compete. Joy has invested so many years of education and training, but teaching is a talent and a style. Joy has her own style. Do yourself a favor and don’t miss this experience with her.
